New York Graphic Design firm | Alfalfa Studio » Type in Image: Keira ...

Wimborne Minister Church

While everyone’s playing around with computer generated ASCII art, British artist Keira Rathbone takes a more classic route in creating images out of typed characters. In fact, there’s no computer involved. She instead uses a typewriter to create her artwork out of coordinated taps on the ‘keyboard’.

In days when patience is scarce and short cuts are plenty, Keira seems to be challenging digital art with traditional fine art. Her artworks range from portraits to landscapes and architecture. There’s great detail in her pieces, and the uneven distribution of ink in each printed letter makes it all the more captivating.

Alfa Sprouts Inc. (Springwater Sprouts) Recalls Alfalfa Sprouts And Clover Sprouts Due To Possible Health Risk

Alfa Sprouts Inc. of Honeoye Falls, NY is recalling approx. 100 lbs of Springwater Sprouts brand Organic Alfalfa Sprouts and bulk 3# Clover Sprouts because they may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections to individuals with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

Alfalfa Weevil and Black Cutworm | OMAFRA Field Crop News

Alfalfa Weevil

Reports from Michigan and Iowa indicate that alfalfa weevils were activity is early this year.  We’ve had some fairly warm weather earlier this spring and the weevils likely have had a bit of a head start. I was out in some fields in Oxford this week and I found some early instar larvae so the weevils are out there. Start your scouting program early this year. Check out the Agronomy Guide for Field Crops publication 812 for scouting tips and control thresholds.  http://bit.ly/IdMao0

 Black Cutworm

Black cutworms were being caught in high numbers in Indiana over the last few weeks and Pennsylvania has reported minor activity with catches increasing in some areas.  These moths no not over winter in Ontariobut are brought in on strong storm systems that come up from the South. Black cutworm females will lay their eggs in low-growing green vegetation (particularly chick weed) and fields with weed growth are tempting places for these moths to land and lay eggs. Later planted corn is at a higher risk of damage from the cutworms since the insects are much larger when the corn seedlings emerge. Bt hybrids that contain Vip3A (Agrisure Viptera 3110 / 3111) provide good control and hybrids that contain Cry1F (Genutiy, SmartStax, Herculex I, Herculex XTRA, SmartStax and Optimum products) may only provide some suppression of younger larvae. Rescue treatments can be effective if infestations are found in time.

Considering that the migratory insects such as the red admiral butterfly are about 2 weeks early this year, storm fronts from the south are likely to bring up BCW a bit earlier. Expect to be scouting once the corn is up.  For more information on black cutworm visit the following link:  http://bit.ly/Jpxtw6

Other things to look for:

Cereal leaf beetle adults have been found in the Alliston area though the numbers are not at thresholds.

Horses Grazing on Alfalfa: How Much is Too Much? | MyHorse Daily ...

Do you give your horse alfalfa? If so, you might want to read this advice given by Dr. Juliet Getty to a reader question.

Question: We live on 10 acres of alfalfa.  I had converted one acre to pasture, and split that in half.  Can I graze our two horses on the alfalfa for an hour each day?  What is too much alfalfa?  We have been feeding them alfalfa/grass bales through the winter.

Thanks, Steve

Answer: Alfalfa is very high in calories due to its protein content. It tends to be the same, if not lower, in sugar and starch as grasses.

As long as your horses are not overweight, they can tolerate one to three hours of grazing per day, with grass (pasture and/or hay) offered for the remainder of the day and night.

Generally, fresh alfalfa will provide about 2 pounds of dry matter per hour of consumption (to give you an idea of how it would compare to hay, which is generally 90 percent dry matter).

BlackIris Design: Yum Yum Friday: Alfalfa Sprouts

I've been sprouting lately, this week the first batch of Alfalfa sprouts is ready so I had a few pretty healthy meals. I put them in my salad with Arugula leaves, a little thousand island dressing and grape tomatoes. I know I could have used a healthier salad dressing but that was all I had in the fridge. I don't think I want balsamic vinegar with the sprouts because it might drown the taste. I also grew some lentils sprouts, which I am planning to eat later on today. They taste really good in a sandwich too, especially with an avocado and if you want to make it even fancier, add some Brie!

Healthy homemade lunch with Alfalfa sprouts

I was amazed at how fresh the Alfalfa tasted! My mom used to grow sprouts too years ago, we even had a 3 levels sprout growing plater thing with draining holes, which unfortunately broke. The alfalfa sprouts we had were much better than the store bought stuff. I really enjoy this new activity, its a little like a science experiment.

If you want to grow your own sprouts, there are many videos and tutorials out there and it is super easy, I will share my experience with you next week, with a short tutorial so you can see how I do mine.

Stay tuned.
