Alberta is getting ready to cash in on China's growing dairy industry.
Twelve million cows need to eat, and Alberta farmers are starting to ship alfalfa overseas to meet the demand. Peter Ball with Alberta-based Green Prairie says there is some big money in it for producers.
"We're inundated with calls from China now because of the fact the protocol is in place, and therefore the demand is going to be extremely high," says Ball. "I would expect us to be shipping at least 100,000 tonnes per year, (so) we're looking at $40 million per year just in alfalfa alone. That is the potential from Alberta, so I think it's a huge positive step for our industry for sure."
Ball says shipping out more alfalfa will create more demand and encourage farmers to grow more of it, and he says alfalfa fits in well with crop rotations. (bd)
