HAGERMAN — Twenty-two teams from all over southern and central New Mexico came to Hagerman Saturday to compete in the Alfalfa Relays, with 55 individuals and 11 relays qualifying for state on a beautiful day to run, jump and throw.
While only six of those individuals came from Chaves County — five boys and one girl — other were just milliseconds away, and coaches seemed more-than-pleased with the efforts of their athletes.
And considering many of the teams were short-handed — the state cheerleading competition and a major FFA event had almost every squad missing a few athletes and other more than a few — the team finishes were respectable, with only 13 points separating first-place Eunice from fifth-place Capitan on the boys side. (Fort Sumner ran away with the girls title.)
A complete story with interviews and dozen of photos will be posted later Sunday.
