I have to admit it: I’m a timid person. In social situations I tend to observe and listen. It is even worse when it comes to dancing. On the dance floor, I often feel awkward and out-of-synch with the rhythm. This fear has always stopped me from letting loose in parties and such. The good news is: it all changed one month ago when I took my first African dance lesson at Cumbe’s Full Moon monthly celebration.
Hesitantly, I ventured to the downtown Brooklyn dance center not knowing what to expect. To my pleasant surprise I had a blast. After the warm up exercises and as soon the live drumming started, I started to move. The energy of the class was as contagious as happiness. You know, when people around you are happy, then you are happy. The welcoming, open environment along with the live drumming and Pat Hall, the incredible teacher, made everyone dance, laugh and truly enjoy the evening. A great workout while having fun…what else do we need?
I never really had done any African dance before. In fact, I’m embarrassed to say that I knew little about it. African dance is something you must experience first hand. Cumbe, the Center for African and Diaspora Dance in Brooklyn has manage to bring together —under one roof— the best dance instructors, musicians, students and staff. They are in downtown Brooklyn close to BAM and to almost any subway line. If you have not done it before, you must give it a try. Yes, you can thank me later.
As an added bonus, Alfalfa Studio is Cumbe’s graphic design company of record. We were responsible for their branding, website, marketing materials and environmental graphics. It’s satisfying to partner with a group that not only looks good, but also delivers good. New Yorkers and Brooklynites are lucky to have a place like Cumbe around.
Their second Full Moon celebration takes place tomorrow March 10 in the evening. Get your tickets here and enjoy the dance! See you there!
