Recall: Leasa Living alfalfa sprouts—Salmonella contamination

Leasa Industries, of Miami, FL is recalling 346 cases of its Leasa Living Alfalfa Sprouts because of potential Salmonella contamination, the Food and Drug Administration reported today.

The recalled Leasa Living alfalfa sprouts were distributed in Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi to retail stores and food service companies on Jan. 4 through Jan. 8, 2012. The recalled alfalfa sprouts have a use by (expiration) date of Feb. 1, 2012. No illnesses have been reported to date in relation to this recall.

It is not clear from either the Leasa or FDA news releases how many containers are included in each of the 346 recalled cases.

The sprouts are sold in clear, 6-ounce plastic containers with a UPC code of 75465-55912. The UPC code is on the side of the label at the side of the container. The expiration date of the package is located on the side of the container.

The potential contamination was discovered when routine customer sample testing on Jan. 9, revealed the presence of Salmonella. For this recall, Leasa is working with the Florida Department of Agriculture and the FDA.

Should you have any Leasa Living Alfalfa Sprouts in 6-ounce containers with use by date of Feb. 1, 2012, as a cautionary measure, Lease suggests you dispose of the product. Grocery stores, food services, and other retailers should also be removing the recalled sprouts from store shelves.

Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weak immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella can experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses.
