Think of anything, any topic, or any interest…Well, chances are someone is making a zine (pronounced “zeen”) about it right now. Hundreds of creative, independent, skillful voices of New York City and beyond are coming together this weekend to share their creations at the Brooklyn Zine Fest.
Some of the things that attract me to zines are their content, their “home-made” feeling, their small circulation and the fact that they almost always focus on a topic or viewpoint not covered anywhere else. For instance the collaborative zine I Love Bad Movies is filled with essays, illustrations, and comics about the most enjoyably bad films. Other zines include collections of Craigslist e-mails; found notes and photographs; true tales of game show auditions & appearances; and bizarre PG-13 stills taken from sex webcams.
Writers, illustrators, graphic designers, artists, photographers, comedians, amateurs, professionals and like-minded will showcase their self-published work at prices ranging between $1 and $10.
This is a great chance to support indie talent and it’s GRATIS!
That’s right, the Brooklyn Zine Fest is FREE & open to the public. Check out the sights, read the goods, get some free stuff and help us show that print is not dead!
Sunday April 15 from 11am to 6pm at Public Assembly (70 North 6th St.) in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, NY. There will be a party afterwards.
