Alfalfa Studio: Graphic Design, Branding, Web Design and Visual ...

From knitted garments to computer cables, the thread or cord surrounds us in our daily lives. This organic shape can be moulded into different shapes for multiple uses. And here’s what New York based Doug Johnston does with it…

Using an old technique of making bowls and baskets with rope, Doug creates his own set of vessels, masks and sculptures that are strong enough to hold the shape, yet malleable. The pale colors with hints of other hues in his pieces give a light and natural feel. He uses sash cord and colored sewing thread to create the sculptures, and due to sewing machine limitations, each piece grows into a unique shape of its own.

Doug Johnston is trained in architecture but his work ranges from art to design and music. See more of his work here.

It’s amazing how the simple weave, in different combinations, can grow into beautiful forms. Come to think of it, even the DNA of all life forms are composed of interlocking bonds. So the next time you’re tying your shoe laces or shopping for a sweater, take a closer look to find out where it grew from and how it turn into something else altogether.
