New York Graphic Design firm | Alfalfa Studio » Simple and Powerful ...

To start the week, we are proud to present ‘eliodomestico’ a solar-powered water distiller made from terracotta, recycled plastic and anodized zinc conceived by Italian industrial designer Gabriele Diamanti.

One of the 12 finalists of the Prix Emile Hermés 2011 Competition, ‘eliodomestico’ is simple yet innovative. Without any filters or electricity, this easy to maintain devise produces 5 liters (0.264 gallons) of water a day and it’s free for everyone living in developing countries.

The images below show the steps in how ‘eliodomestico’ works. For more information visit the project page at the designer’s website.

Many times, the simplest ideas are the most powerful ones. Kudos Gabriele!

Step 1: Pouring the salty water

Step 2: The sun does the work all day long till the evening

Step 3: Extracting the fresh water

Voila! You got fresh water (average production: 5 liters per day)

The bowl was designed to be easy to carry over the head
